About Suzanne

Suzanne M. Packer exhibited her first work in the San Francisco Museum of Art when she was five years old.  Her work has since been exhibited and collected from New England to California, Greece, and Pakistan. It is in many private and corporate collections, including the Cahoon Museum of American Art, the Cape Cod Museum of Art, and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.

Packer became the founding Director of the Cape Cod Museum of Art in 1983, after living in Mexico City, Mexico and London, England. Years living abroad had a significant influence on her painting. Her formal training includes the Rhode Island School of Design, the Art Students League of New York City, and the Fine Arts Work Center of Provincetown. During the Cape Cod years she has maintained studio spaces at the Brewster Street Studios, Provincetown, MA, the A Street Studios and the Fenway Studios, both Boston, MA  and the Owl Studios at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. Now her unruly Bass River gardens and the ever-changing waters of Cape Cod find their way into her work at her Horse Way Studio.

Biography

2018 was the year that Packer received the Muse Artist Award, presented by the Cape Cod Museum of Art, for “outstanding contributions to the Cape Cod Museum of Art and to the community”. With this award came Cape Waters Abstracted, a solo exhibition of her paintings held at the museum. Other one-person exhibitions over the years have included the Cahoon Museum of American Art in 1997, the Sparrow House Museum in 1999, and Spanning The Years: A. S. Packer & Suzanne M. Packer at the Cape Cod Museum of Art in 2007. The exhibition included paintings and illustrations by her father and mentor, the noted New York illustrator, A. S. Pacer. Solo exhibitions include the Cape Cod Chat House Galleries, 2013 through 2016 and currently at the Cross Rip Gallery since 2017.

Selected juried shows include: The League At The Cape, Provincetown Art Association & Museum, Provincetown, MA, 1993, jurors, Marisol, Michael Goldberg, Will Barnet and Francis Cunningham, National Open Painting, The Providence Art Club, Providence, RI, 2002 and 2010, juror, Gretchen Dow Simpson, Radius, DWRI Letterpress Gallery, Providence, RI, 2013, juror, Bunny Harvey, Botanicals Reinterpreted, Dillon Gallery, Cohasset, MA, 2018, juror Mary Moquin, The Works National, Cultural Center of Cape Cod, 2019, juror Jackie Reeves, The Leo Diehl Show, Creative Arts Center, 2002 and 2009, Happy Place, Cape Cod Museum of Art 2023 and Cape to Cape, Rocky Neck Art Colony, Gloucester, MA, 2023. Since her days at RISD she has studied with Sal Del Deo, Anna Poor, Bert Yarbrough, Pricilla Sibley, Selina Trieff & her father, A. S. Packer.

"Suzanne M. Packer takes it further by amping up the scale and introducing aromatic persuasion with a floral palette balanced by cool watery blues. Known more for her colorful still lifes, figures and plein-air paintings as part of the "21 in Truro" collective, Packer makes her comfortable transition to abstraction seem like a natural progression from the sources of her coveted flower garden and the Cape's waterways."

Andre Van Der Wende, Cape Cod Times, Cape Week,

March 16, 2012

"The Note is a splendid, possibly great still life, not least because of superb, if subtle, use of plane and recession, almost unknown in still life painting."

Frank Getlein, Art Critic & Curator, 1997

In addition to painting, Suzanne devotes a significant amount of time to mentoring other artists and to community projects. She was a founder and co-chair of Women Creating, a multi-media exhibition celebrating the creative women of Cape Cod. She served on the staff of the Chatham Creative Arts Center as coordinator of the Festival of the Arts, a three-day, nationally juried arts and crafts festival. She served nine years on the Board of the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. Since its inception in 1999, she has been a member of the group of artists known as Twenty-One In Truro. She is Past President, Cape Cod Branch of the National League of American Pen Women, a member of The Printmakers of Cape Cod and an Honorary Trustee at the Cape Cod Museum of Art. Suzanne gives classes, demonstrations and workshops at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, and The Cape Cod Museum of Art.

Another medium has been added to Packer's creativity, the White-Line Woodblock Print, AKA the Provincetown Print. Her first show of the prints was in 2013 at the Chat House Gallery. In 2016 she curated, “Crossing the Line: Innovators of the White-Line Print” at the Cape Cod Museum of Art.

“Very lovely and technically superb white-line woodcuts. The Provincetown print tradition lives on."

Abigail Rorer, Juror, “Impressions, Prints”

“According to information from former museum director Suzanne Packer that is displayed with the artwork, Bengtson acquainted herself with the Cape after moving here in the early ’80s by attending estate sales, attending art openings and visiting studios. At one time, her collection of local art filled her house and garage, Packer said, and she created shows in a variety of local buildings, including one of William H. Llittlefield paintings at the CCMOA.”

KATHIE SCRIZZI DRISCOLI, The Collection of Ann F. Bengtson, Patron of the Arts, Cape Cod Times/Cape Week, January 14, 2022

”The vivid, unexpected shapes and colors, which essentialize the energy, essence and spirit of place, create an almost telepathic response: without seeing a realistic rendering, viewers seem to know exactly where her subject is, for there is a universality not dependent on knowing the specific places she explores in paint. Her paintings stay in your mind after viewing, changing their perception.”

LEE ROSCOE, Art Scope, May/June 2019

"Packer's still-life works use color and pattern to draw the viewer into, through and around the painting."

ANN LUONGO,  Cape Cod Magazine, Jan/Feb 2015

“I believe this may be Suzanne Packer’s best exhibition yet. To be specific, “Sand & Water”, is of a very common subject: the dunes of Cape, but Suzanne did not create a common work. It has in it underpinnings the feel of the great American regional painters from the 1940’s - the touch and layout of George Bellows with the palette of Georgia O’Keeffe…

“Water Runs Through” …striking bands of color staccato across the canvas…abstract or   landscape”…

HEATHER BLUME, artist and Certified Art Appraiser, 2015

"Very lovely and technically superb white-line woodcuts. The Provincetown print tradition lives on."

ABIGAIL RORER, Juror,”Impressions, Prints”, Cultural Center of Cape Cod,     March, 2014

“Several of the artists featured in the exhibit have also given talks about the white-line style, including Yarmouth’s Suzanne Packer. An established artist in other media,    Packer represents the continuation of the white-line school, having recently taken up    the technique.”

CONOR POWERS-SMITH,  Cape’s Hallmark Art Form on Display, The Register,  November 7, 2013

"Dear Musers,

We're back at the Dennis Memorial Library this week, but what a great meeting we had last week, welcoming spring with Suzanne Packer's amazing body of work on exhibit throughout The Chat House. Her talk about her work was revealing and inspirational. Do yourself a favor and see it there! See some photos on our FB page."

RORY MARCUS, Morning Muse email, March 24, 2013

"There are works from artists including Harry Holl, Suzanne Packer, Robert Vickery, Clare Leighton, Alexander Calder, Selina Trieff and many more.”

Barnstable Patriot , Standing Strong, September 10, 2012

ANDRE VAN DER WENDE, Cape Cod Times, Cape Week, March 16, 2012

“Suzanne Packer, who also served as the museum’s first director, created a work titled ” Dune Women" subtle interpretation of the female form that took many viewers by surprise.”

KAREN JEFFREY, Cape Cod Times, April 10, 2006

“Her oil paintings are inspired by time spent in Mexico and by the gardens and waters that surround her Bass River studio.”

ARLEEN HECHT, Falmouth Enterprise, July 29, 2005

“Expanding a collection is quite a challenge for a small museum…to acquire and exhibit works that show the influence of Cape Cod on American art, said executive director of the Cape Museum of Fine Arts, Elizabeth Ives Hunter….  Among the museum’s newly acquired work …a painting by Suzanne Packer…”

TIM WOOD, A-Plus, October, 2003

“But the more poignant paintings in Land of the Free, Home of the Brave are those reaffirming our sense of place, the small comforts of home and the familiar: the traditions we so love, like Suzanne Packer’s homespun, eloquent still life.”

CAROL K. DUMAS, Cape Codder, Febebruary 7, 2002

“Suzanne Packer has several new still life paintings in the exhibit. I was most impressed with “Still Life with Plums.”…. The bravura rendering of these objects and the fresh style make this an endearing composition.”

WILLIAM J. ADELMAN, JR., Falmouth Enterprise, December 2001

“Cottage Shadows, in 21 In Truro at the Cahoon Museum of American Art, Suzanne Packer’s impressionist oil on canvas, she took out the landscaping to emphasize the light. The work does show shadows, but more important is the uncanny iridescent light at the roofline. Many artists have talked about that silvery light that is so different in Truro and in Provincetown.

DARYL SALERNO, Cape Cod Community Papers, August 2000

“To say that Suzanne M. Packer paints “still life” would be misleading at best. Bold colors, feisty brush strokes, unusual angles and fabric that nearly ripple off the canvas, entice us into each lush, organic environment. There is hardly a “still” object in a fistful of flowers or a table laden with fruit, vegetables and an old pitcher. Each object seems to have a movement, a rhythm of its' own created by confident lines that vibrate with color.”

LOIS ATHERTON, Director, Sparrow House Museum, September 7, 1999

“If Van Gogh had a happier life he would have painted like you.”

MELISSA SOUTHWORTH, 1998

“Once your work was put up, the gallery was transformed into an explosion of positive color and feeling. The common strand that everybody is stating is what a joyful mood       the paintings create. I’m honored as the director of the Market Barn Gallery to have your show.”

KEN CARSON, Director Market Barn Gallery, July 17, 1998

“The Note is a splendid, possibly great still life, not least because of superb, if subtle, use of plane and recession, almost unknown in still life painting.”

FRANK GETLEIN, Art Critic & Curator, 1997

“Flourishing: Paintings by Suzanne M. Packer is her ninth solo exhibition and it is one of great strength, maturity and exuberance…Flourishing was the only possible title.”

DEBORAH CARR, Cape Codder, June 26, 1997

“I was drawn into Suzanne’s lush environments of sinuous lines and fluid, brilliant color. Her paintings virtually drip with confidence and freedom.”

MAUREEN TWOHIG, Director Cahoon Museum of American Art, 1997

“Suzanne M. Packer’s oils are impressions done in a palette of muted colors. Her View From Uncle Tim’s features rapid brush strokes, close values, and a neat composition.”

WILLIAM J. ADELMAN, JR., The Falmouth Enterprise, Oct.1, 1996

“Summer Repast, is possibly the most effectively realized work… The painting is all color, light, and movement, and painted with the verve and spontaneity of an early Henri Matisse… or Pierre Bonnard…Little Pamet, …has to share top billing… This interesting and dynamic painting of swirling paint, contrasts of green, and striking composition at once reflects the Cape landscape and the artist’s vision.”

PETER L. KOENIG, Falmouth Enterprise, Nov.17, 1995

“Works which particularly struck my eye include a bright oil painting, Brewster Street Still Life, by Suzanne M. Packer.”

JOYCE EDINBERG, Cape Codder, February 28, 1995

“Some of the Cape’s most interesting artists are gathered in Women Creating… the curators, Suzanne M. Packer and Linda S. Young, are talented artists in their own rights.”

JANET BIRCHFIELD, Artistically Speaking, 99.9 WQRC, March 1995

“Some of the names Cape art lovers will recognize in the juried part of the League at the Cape show are…Suzanne Packer…”

CINDY NICKERSON, Cape Cod Times, August 23, 1993

“La Marquesa, Mexico,…It’s a bold, life interpretation of a yucca plant, which she painted on site in the hills north of Mexico City.”

CINDY NICKERSON, Cape Cod Times, January 22, 1993
